El Paso, TEXAS — Major League Baseball (MLB) will again partner with El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association (BYAA) for a unique event.

Two of the top women in the sports industry, Destinee Martinez and Renee Tirado, will make their way to the Borderland for PLAY BALL El Paso on May 5 at Southwest University Park. The event on Cinco de Mayo will mark the first bi-national PLAY BALL event for MLB, as kids from Texas, New Mexico and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico participate in the clinic.

Leading up to the clinic, Martinez and Tirado will present a special one-hour “pep talk” to Borderland youth on May 4 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The goal of the presentation is to inspire youth to dream big through the message: “Why every player who gets an education wins,” according to Kristi Borden, director of development for BYAA.

Martinez and Tirado will be sharing their success stories as well as answering questions. Martinez has an impressive resume as a member of the 2013 NCAA national championship team while at Oklahoma, a member of the 2011 International Softball Federation junior world championship team and a gold medalist for the 2010 Pan American team (18 and under).

Tirado is the vice president of talent and head of diversity and inclusion for MLB. Tirado has played an integral role in helping MLB begin to expand its base of talent. Among her more recent efforts is the creation of a fellowship program aimed at recruiting diverse talent for entry-level positions at each of the 30 clubs.

The presentation is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on May 4 at The BASE, 6801 Commerce, #7D in El Paso.
