BORDER YOUTH ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION RECEIVES GRANT FROM SUPERIOR HEALTHPLAN

The Border Youth Athletic Association (BYAA) has received a $2000 grant from Superior
Healthplan in support of their BASE Play RBI program. BYAA, founded in 2000, is a 501
(c)(3) nonprofit that provides educational and developmental opportunities to children ages 6
to 18. Their BASE Play RBI program is a community outreach program that serves hundreds
of children and families from Title 1 schools in the Paso Del Norte region. The after-school
program is made possible through partnerships with area school districts, providing
academic support and life-changing experiences for participants through athletics. Over 75%
of BASE Play’s service population reports an address in an area colonia, a low-income
community, isolated from resources and lacking proper infrastructure. The program allows
students in grades 4 through 5 to reach their full potential academically and physically.
Through the mentorship and academic support given by staff, coaches, and volunteers, an
average of 70% of students entering the program failing one or more classes transition to
passing grades by the end of a season, and 29% are able to obtain B’s or higher. The Border
Youth Athletic Association is excited to be a recipient of a Superior Healthplan grant this
year.
